Little Thumbelina

For my third year project I created a immersive theatre production of Little Thumbelina written by Hans Christian Anderson. My interpretation of Thumbelina is a dystopian post-apocalyptic fantasy that was caused by human created pollution. Also showing the concept of sustainability, reinforcing the idea of pollution within society.

In my production I have changed the age of Thumbelina to a young adult making the age range more appropriate and ethical. As well as relating to my chosen target audience of teenagers and young adults.

I chose the sustainability topic because of the importance and relevance within society because of pollution. If the actions of society do not change it will result in detrimental impacts on the environment and our future. The aim of the production is to make the audience think about their contributions towards pollution , encouraging them to change their actions. Additionally, questioning the contribution that theatre makes towards pollution and their approach to sustainability. Destruction ,pollution , nature , greed , superiority and time are examples of the themes that are in the production and are further represented by each character, these reinforce the aims of the production.

In the development of the designs and costumes it has used a range of recycled objects and fabrics to demonstrate the idea of sustainability. Concentrating on two key factors of pollution ,waste pollution and fabric waste .The two aspects form a link within the theatre genre underpinning the outcome of the performance and questioning theatres contribution.

An urgent response is needed for the 21st century issues and this production will help to illustrate this. The relevance of the performance in modern day addressing the important issues that it is mirroring .Emphasising the success that this performance can produce.
